Syringe Safety

Millions of people use needles, syringes, and lancets at home to care for their health. These needles, syringes, and lancets are called sharps.

It is important to learn how to use and dispose of needles and other sharps safely to prevent infections and injuries to yourself and other people.

  1. Use a new needle each and every time you inject.
Each time you reuse a needle, the point becomes more jagged. Damaged points can lead to infections, cause painful sores, and damage your veins.

Click here to see what your needle looks like each time you reuse it.

  2. Don’t use someone else’s needles or share your needles with others.
HIV, Hepatitis C and other diseases can be spread by people sharing their needles!

Click here for information on where to get free or low-cost needles.

  3. Once you use a needle, put it in a safe container and keep it in a safe place away from children and pets.

Click here to find where you can purchase containers or learn to make your own.

  4. Once your sharps container is almost full, drop it off at a disposal site.
Click here to find a site near you.
