Breastfeeding Support

Mom-to-mom breastfeeding support and access to trained breastfeeding assistance has been proven to help families continue nursing longer, which helps moms, babies, and families stay healthy. The groups listed below offer mom-to-mom support and additional guidance from Lactation Counselors and IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants). For more information about any of the resources listed below, please see the individual listings. 

Cayuga County:

Daytime and evening support groups are forming now at several locations in Auburn and the surrounding area. Meet other nursing moms and families, enjoy yummy snacks, and get support and advice from a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. For more information, call Michelle Tumber, (315) 246-8848.  
 

Onondaga County:

Madison County:

Pregnant and nursing mothers and families in Madison County are always welcome at Madison County Health Department’s mother-to-mother support groups, which are facilitated by Lactation Counselors and IBCLCs and  offer free, friendly breastfeeding support and baby weighing stations.

Northern Area group meets at Oneida Healthcare Baby Weighing Station, 607 Seneca Street, Oneida. Tuesdays 4 pm – 7 pm and Fridays 1 pm – 4pm. For more information about the Northern Area group, call Patty Gorman, (315) 361-2065.

Southern Area group meets at Community Action Partnership for Madison County, 6 Cambridge Ave, Morrisville (next to Big M Market.) Mondays 11 am - 1 pm. For more information about the Southern Area Group, call Amy, (315) 363-3210 or Molly, (315) 813-3132.

  • La Leche League is the grandmother of all breastfeeding support organizations, and has been the leader in mother-to-mother support since 1956! Call La Leche League at 1 (800)-LALECHE to find a group near you, and for warmline breastfeeding support. Or, visit http://www.llli.org.
     
  • Visit http://www.womenshealth.gov/breastfeeding or call 1-(800)-994-9662 to talk to a trained peer counselor and get referrals and information about breastfeeding problems.

  • Visit http://www.kellymom.com, one of the best web-based sources of evidence-based information on breastfeeding, written by an IBCLC.
